Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Stored in your air conditioner’s coils, refrigerants are liquids that cool and dehumidify your air. Without refrigerants, air conditioning would not be possible. For a long time, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 as a result of its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To reduce environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, so it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel great about using this refrigerant in Tuscaloosa because it’ll help make your cooling system work efficiently, reliably and quietly, and offer the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was manufactured before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should think about upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately out of production. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at KDM Service Corporation work with R-410A, so you can be sure we have an AC or heat pump more suited to your needs. Be sure to steer clear of”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
