However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running. Furnace Age The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to view and weigh all of your possibilities. Increased Gas or Electric Bills Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system. More Frequent Furnace Repairs The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns.
